Crusty Eyes + Working Sundays = bad juju

Jul. 5th, 2009 | 10:29 am

I'm at work on a Sunday - although I will be taking Friday and Monday off to play with our new puppy - but the point is! The point is! I'm not too sure, but had a good time last night, first time out properly since forever and ever with my single Vodka mudslide (and there was no mudslide out this morning I'm happy to report, hurray for lactose tolerance!)

Last night had slow cooked lambshanks with mashed potato and pumpkin, peas and corn - shanks were slightly tough considering they'd been in there for 8 hours!!! Jason thinks its the lack of browning and I think maybe not enough liquid?

There's so many things that have to be done to the garden - pulling out tree stumps, digging out the vegetation at the back, pruning and pruning and pruning, figuring out what to do with the sand in the sandpit, transforming the cubbyhouse into a coop - ahhh! Also did you know you can buy worms at Bunnings?

There will be a house/puppy warming at some point, but right now I think it's going to be one on one's until everything is settled down. Plus it'll give me an excuse to start ramping up the cooking /food photography again.

New Home, New Phone, New Puppy (Soon)

Jun. 29th, 2009 | 11:02 am

So the big move is pretty much over - spent our first night at the house and I slept amazing well and woke up before my alarm clock (miracle!) We still need to find a blanket box, shoe box, some free standing lamps and some kick ass artwork. James Jean needs a frame but he'll have pride of place in the bedroom.

Things that are not so awesome - need to install an antenna

Called our new home number - rang through but nothing on the other end (no dial tone at all!) HELP!!

Also does anyone know where we can get cheap outdoor furniture?

Also puppy soon!!!!!

Jason and Susan be adults now

May. 26th, 2009 | 02:49 pm

By the way, friends - Jason and Susan bought a house!

So the contract was signed and returned today and now Jason and I are off to ANZ to see if they can do us a deal-o for our home loan or we'll be moving all of our accounts and credit card to NAB since we already have pre-approval.

Being an adult is stressful:
-Arranged a solicitor
-Building and pest inspection Thursday
- $5000 deposit paid today
- Haggling with the bank

Fun things:
- Buying furniture (or the actual thinking of buying furniture
- Planning a house warming
- Planning to add a chicken coop
- Planning a veggie garden and fruit trees
- Going to see our puppy for the first time on Saturday.

Jason and Susan stop being lazyish

Apr. 22nd, 2009 | 08:33 am

Well the Brisbane weather seems to have blocked up our sinuses pretty much - thanks guys!

Spent Saturday night with Hammond shooting zombies which was more fun than I expected after I worked out how to walk around properly.

Sunday, Jason and I headed out to the family tomb sweeping before going down to the GC to see his mum plus kids plus boyfriend. Spent too much money at Pacific Fair, had a huge ladies' migriane and vomitted up some prawn and rice.

Monday was Dreamworld day.

Tuesday, we - went - to - see - puppies!!! Or at least the pregnant mother of the puppies. We knew we wanted a friendly dog, but it was my first chance to really play with a Vizsla and they are so adorable. Pride (the mother) and Breeze (daughter from another litter) were the sweetest things in the world although Jason preferred Hawk (brother of the mother) because he was huge and happy and liked to eat my hair.

The breeder thought we'd be better suited with a female though plus there's a nine deep waiting list for boys.

So the girl name we're probably going to use is Zsa Zsa.

London stuffed

Apr. 9th, 2009 | 08:13 am
location: United Kingdom, England, Greater London

Ate seven courses at maze (cost: not as expensive as anticipated verdict: much better than Rhodes 24. - I'm definitely sure it's possible to get drunk off food.

Jason and I tottered back to our tiny hotel room, he's showering and in a bit we're off to the honest sausage for brekkie and then to see the new thing at London zoo and then onto the freud museum and then a last goodbye to the hill.

See you soon, guys!

Prague Penultimate

Apr. 7th, 2009 | 10:20 am

Yesterday I was feeling a bit tourist-ed out so Jason went to the castle while I stayed at the apartment reading Kakfa on the shore.

Afternoon-wise, we headed up Petrin Hill, saw the very uninspiring Mirror Maze and went down to see the monument to the victims of communism. Went back into Old Square, ate some Prague Ham, greasy potato cakes, a gingerbread pony and then had an (expensive) yet totally satisfying carriage ride (okay I miss horses and this one was particularly licky).

To end: here's some photos for your enjoyment -

Susan climbing down a 'billy-goat' path Jason insisted on using.

Jason in the Mirror Maze

Some kind of sculpture dedicate to world co-operation or something like that.

Barcelona and Prague

Apr. 3rd, 2009 | 08:24 pm

Barcelona (my city of choice) was mainly wet and overpriced.

After only half a day in Prague - it's our European city of choice so far! Our apartment here is much bigger and almost cheaper than our flat back in London and after lunch at Cafe de Paris (chicken bouillon strengthened with gin - I would drown in it gladly) I'm super eager to see some cool stuff tomorrow.

Also Obama is apparently coming to town on Sunday and the US Embassy and the Castle are right down the road and in perfect stalker distance!!

Please see photos of La Pedera, empty glass which once contained bouillon and the John Lennon Wall).

Also Clare Julia - we walked past your recommended place and it's looks amazing!!!!

Moving day

Mar. 23rd, 2009 | 08:30 am
location: United Kingdom, England

Sitting on my kitchen bench staring intensely out the window, waiting for removalists. I'm a bit nervous - first time using professional movers and plus my menstrual cycle is completely late. I hate you body!

In other news the flat looks refreshingly empty and tomorrow we have a cleaner coming in to give it a once over. I don't see getting our bond back being an issue but just in case there's always the leakig roof, unfixed kitchen cabinet door plus the black mold I told her about 6 months ago.

Anyhow I see a giant van with my name on it.

3 days left- uniqlo woes

Mar. 17th, 2009 | 06:05 pm
location: United Kingdom, England

At uniqlo waiting for Jason to try on his new black skinny jeans. Tried some on myself which made me feel fat and ugly and completely not ready for Europe.

Maybe a nice shopping trip to Camden then?

Today is St patricks day and people are actually excited and we're thinking of hitting the local for dinner.

Also listening to nick and norah's infinite playlist soundtrack which is shallow but soothing in a Juno sort of way.

Last Week

Mar. 16th, 2009 | 07:43 am

It's my last week of work and then onto Europe. There's no need to do it, so I've promised myself I'm not doing any major overtime this week (especially as I'm not being paid for it), dinner at Rhodes 24 in the Tower on Thursday night (yay!), lunch with Mel at D Sum 2 (yay!), still more house viewings (boo), selling of stuff (boo), packing (boo), looking at Vizsla puppies (yay), realising there won't be any litters until next July/August (boo).

Also I made cornbread and I love it. It even makes me dislike George W. Bush a sliver less. (almost).

See y'all in April!

Oh, and we saw a Picasso exhibition at the National Gallery, which was awesome.

Also photos from our weekend at Primrose Hill and Regents Park

Work Migraine

Mar. 2nd, 2009 | 07:59 am

Gawd, only 18 days left (including weekends, because I think it's important to include things like that) until bye, bye work. I haven't even left the apartment yet and my head's going completely nutso.

Jason, Ali and I saw the Defining Constructivism exhibition at the Tate Modern which was interesting and Russian and stoic. If we have time I'd love to go back for the Roni G exhibition.

Then onto the Borough Market for an expensive! fish and chips at Fish! follows by shopping.

This weekend I made: spag bol, roasted shoulder of lamb stuffed with garlic, rosemary and anchovies and choc-muesli cookies.

Egg Fried Rice - Back to Basics

Mar. 1st, 2009 | 04:59 pm

I despise using soy sauce as anything other than a pork dumpling garnish, and only then when carefully mixed with a dash of sesame seed oil and finely minced garlic.

XO review

Feb. 28th, 2009 | 06:05 pm

I was going to start off this blog with a scathing review on XO and a good old rant about 'pan-Asian' cuisine, but after a quick Google found Giles Coren has summed up all my feelings in a single paragraph.

Foodie Susan

Feb. 26th, 2009 | 11:11 pm

Food Susan and all things related to her will now live here.

She will write recipes; she will review restaurants; and she will take photographs and post them (even if they're terrible).

Weak weekend

Feb. 22nd, 2009 | 10:40 pm
location: United Kingdom, England

Jason has been horribly sick with food poisoning so I made chicken broth, nagged him to drink fluids which he seemed to be keeping down until a couple hours ago. Now he's lying in bed with an ice pack and a bucket and i'm very worried about his hydration levels.

Tomorrow if he's not feeling better or keeping anything down I'm going to take him to a gp or a walk in clinic.

In other news the taming of the shrew was amazing and scary, I made mushroom strudel, and we're thinking of taking weekend trips to straford to see the tempest and Kent to the amazing chocolate factory.
